Past, Present and Future

Consider that you can use language of sequence in many different areas. The most obvious is in reported speech, however you can also use the language of sequence in the present and in the future. The language of sequence is incredibly powerful in the areas of motivation and inspirational speaking!

Examples
Past
First, John earned a degree in political science. Second he obtained a position with a reputable consulting company, and third after many years of experience, John started his own business.

Present
First we need to organise the equipment, second we need to establish the ground rules and third we need to begin play.

Future
At first you will find working out in the gym difficult, second you're going to notice that you have a tired and strained body. Third you will become aware of the improvements of regular exercise and gym workouts, finally you will notice how good it feels to have a fit healthy body once again!

Further examples:

At first I was surprised when John asked Mary to dance, I was even more surprised when he next asked Wendy to dance, then Sarah, and finally Helen said "yes" and John's persistence paid off.
