Speech organ positions

The phonetic symbol ɑ: represents the open back unrounded vowel sound, as in the word "car". To make this sound, follow these steps:

1. Begin with your mouth open and your tongue resting in the bottom of your mouth.
2. Raise the back of your tongue towards the soft palate at the back of your mouth.
3. Keep the middle of your tongue slightly lowered, creating a large space in your mouth.
4. Keep your lips slightly apart and relaxed, without rounding them.
5. Exhale a steady stream of air through your mouth while keeping your tongue and lips in the same position.
6. Sustain the sound for a few seconds, making sure to keep the same position of your tongue and lips throughout.
